Alert of medicine shortages in EU

All across the European continent supply chain shortages are on the rise. While major disruptions were caused by the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russo-Ukraine war, it has been reported that this issue has been ongoing for the past 20 years.

The diseases which are affected the most are those of the nervous system, cardiovascular complications and anti-infectives for systemic use which respectively account for a fifth (nervous) and a quarter (cardiovascular and anti-infectives) of all total shortages between 2018 and 2023.

With the increasing pressure received from GPs, pharmacists and patients, the EU has taken action recently through the Pharmaceutical Reform in an attempt to better monitor the supply of essential medicines.

Contingency plans are also being put in place, including the establishment of early warning systems.
