AUDIOVISUAL RULES: EU UPDATED DIRECTIVE

At the end of May, the European Commission presented its proposal for an updated Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD). The revision is aimed at creating a fairer and safer audiovisual and media environment.

While promoting European film and culture, ensuring the independence of audiovisual regulators and giving more flexibility over advertising, the AVMSD has been updated to better address specific issues, such as tackling hate speech and protecting children and young people from inappropriate advertising.

Among the latter, the Directive targets the advertising of foods and beverages which are not recommended in diets due to their low nutritional value and high percentage of fat, trans-fatty acids, salt or sugar. According to the Directive, the Member States need to develop self- and co-regulatory codes of conduct to ensure that the nutritional characteristics of these products are not promoted in a positive light.
