Council of the EU adopts the Recommendation on AMR

On 13 June 2023, the Council has adopted a recommendation to intensify the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR).

The recommendation is based on a ”One Health” approach, namely the recognition that human, animal, and environmental health are interlinked and therefore all efforts to tackle AMR should involve tageted actions in the three areas.

More specifically the recommendaton includes:

  • targets suggested by the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) such as a 20% reduction in the total consumption of human antibiotics and a 50% reduction in overall sales of antimicrobials used for animal farming and aquaculture
  • strengthen national action plan to support the monitoring of current consumption and distribution of antibiotics, and support the achievement of the established targets
  • improve the health of animals involved in the food chain
  • develop awareness campaigns about the risks of AMR for professionals and the general population.
