ECDC published technical report on infection control based on feedback from UEMO

On April 2020, the UEMO Board was contacted by the European Centre for Disease, Prevention and Control (ECDC) to provide feedback to the ECDC guidelines on infection control. The result was published on June 9 by the ECDC as a “Technical Report” document entitled “COVID-19 infection prevention and control for primary care, including general practitioner practices, dental clinics and pharmacy settings“.

Thanks to our Italian colleagues, who first alerted us to the need for use of robust personal protective equipment (PPE) when seeing patients with respiratory symptoms back in February, we were able to convince the ECDC to change their recommendation to just use surgical masks when seeing patients with suspected COVID-19 (the World Health Organisation (WHO) recommendation), and they now recommend a FFP grade respirator , and also recommend “at least” a surgical mask when seeing non-suspected patients. This is a major change particularly to WHO advice, on which guidelines in most countries are based on.

UEMO truly hopes this outcome will help European countries to shape PPE policies that better protect GPs in the frontline. This is a good example of how UEMO can help change things for the better!
