Italian GP, Dr. Roberto Stella dies amidst corona virus outbreak

It is with great sorrow that we’ve learned that Dr. Roberto Stella, 67, Italian GP, died on Tuesday night (March 10th) at Como Hospital where he was being treated for respiratory failure due to the coronavirus. Dr. Stella has presumably contracted the virus while on duty, on the frontline taking care of patients and directing them to appropriate care. His death was confirmed by the town’s mayor, Mario Landriscina.

Dr. Stella was President of the Order of Doctors of the Province of Varese (Lombardy) and Director of the Lombard Training School in General Medicine. He was a friend of our organisation and was present during some of our bi-annual conferences held during the Italian Presidency of the UEMO and he promoted the idea of university redevelopment of General Medicine in Italy.

UEMO expresses its solidarity with the family of Dr. Stella and the entire country, currently facing an unprecedented outbreak that is obliging healthcare professionals to work at 200% in order to curb the virus from further spreading.
