THE NEW DIRECTIVE FOR TOBACCO

The EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD) is now applicable in EU Member States. Extensively lobbied against by the industry of tobacco, the TDP is considered a majot step towards a better functioning of the internal market for tobacco and related products, with the aim of ensuring a high level of protection for European citizens.

A key change are the new requirements on the labelling and marking of tobacco product packets: 65{cabf78295431282ca1bec49ffbe2c87b89a1285ae102b2d0687184fc21af24ba} of the front and the back of cigarette packs will have to be covered with graphic health warnings (such as “tobacco smoke contains over 70 substances known to cause cancer”.

Under the TPD all packs will be required to have a cuboid shape, menthol and other flavoured cigarettes will be banned and new rules for electronic cigarettes will be applied.
